Experience

This trail is a hike up to the summit of Bear Butte. Trees are rare so this trail is best hiked early in the day or on cooler days. This is a good hike if you are up for a challenge. There are some benches along the way to rest. Watch your step as rattlesnakes are common in this area. A picturesque view is waiting at the top to make this trip worthwhile.
TIPS: NO PETS are allowed on the trail. This is a state park, so there is an entrance fee.

Directions

  • From Sturgis, take Hwy 34 east to Hwy 79.
  • Turn North on Hwy 79 for 8 miles following the signs.

My husband and I love this hike. We have hiked it 4 times already this year. Just this last weekend my husband hiked it twice.

The bottom of the hike is quite the leg burner due to the steps. However, it is very rewarding once you get to the top as the view is amazing.

Good hike, good leg workout, great views. Going down can be tricky on the uneven rocks. Probably not a good hike for beginners or young children. No dogs allowed.

I’m referencing a MapMyHike log from 5/23/16, but I also hiked it again this winter, through snow drifts on the back side of the trail. Bitter winds but we made it, and it was actually kind of fun and easier on my injured ankle to hike through the snow. Always a great view.

This one is challenging. Lots of loose rock and not much shade. Go on a cooler day. It was 104 the day we went.

This was the first hike of our Centennial trail adventure. The day we did it, the temperature was -14 degrees with wind chill. We wore spikes which worked well and I highly recommend doing in the winter. The wind was strong and bitter on the north side of the mountain. The hike was a great workout, all up hill but it does wind around so not straight up. I believe our devices said it was equivalent to 121 flights of stairs. We did it again later than month, and it was 10 degrees. There was beautiful frost everywhere! There are some areas that are pretty exposed so
maybe not ideal for small children.

can be a strenuous hike, esp. on a hot day as almost all the trail is without shade. However this is a beautiful and spiritual hike, it’s easy to see why many tribes view this place as sacred. Footing can be tricky with loose rocks and the stair sections aren’t the best. Expansive views from the top and a wonderful place to contemplate.

Absolutely stunning! I made a sunrise trek up Bear Butte during the rally, and it was such an incredible slice of serenity in the middle of all the chaos. I can see why this is such a special place for so many.
