Experience

Named in honor of First Lady Grace Coolidge, wife of President Calvin Coolidge. This is a fairly easy hike along Grace Coolidge Creek (a popular area for fly fishing), however the creek crossings can be difficult. Expect wet feet as you will cross the creek over a dozen times. (A great trail for dogs or kids who like to cool off during a hike!) Seven dams are located along the trail. Watch for poison ivy & keep an eye out for rattlesnakes.

Directions

  • From Custer, take Hwy 16A east to Hwy 87.
  • Head north on Hwy 87 to Playhouse Rd.
  • Turn right onto Center Lake Rd. The north trailhead is adjacent to the swim beach at Center Lake.

It was a beautiful weekend in Custer State Park on May 6th so we took the dogs to the Grace Coolidge Walk-in Fishing Area. We started at Center Lake trailhead. It was a warm day so the dogs loved getting in the creek every once in a while to cool off. Beautiful scenery all around.

Great trail along the creek. Today was sunny with a light breezy and the lake was amazing. Took the loop around the lake when we arrive then back to the Southern Trailhead. Very easy walk.

This is a great little family hike. It’s pretty high traffic, but it was still a lot of fun. We enjoyed all the river crossings and there were plenty of spots to skip rocks and dip your toes in the water. Dogs and kids give this hike two thumbs (or paws) up! We spent some time swimming at Center Lake at the end of our hike. There is a nice shower/changing room, bathrooms, a playground and a nice sandy beach. Between the hike and the lake, this is a wonderful way to spend a day with the family.

Was a very nice hike, had to cross the creek numerous times, but had planks over the creek and was an easy hike.
