Little Spearfish Trail
Distance: 7.2m round trip | Climb: 849ft | Surface: dirt
The sign at the trail head is a bit confusing, but if you are standing at the sign, you can go either right or left and you are on the Little Spearfish Trail loop. If you go counter clockwise you will start out with an easy hike along the creek. This is the only water for most of the trail so if you have a dog with you, take that into consideration when determining which way to start. Portions of the trail were being redone when we hiked in September 2016, which added an additional 1.2 miles to the length found on the forest service website. There may still be some discrepancy in the length at publication, so don’t be alarmed if the trail ends up being a little longer than 7.2 miles!
- From Spearfish, take 14A (Spearfish Canyon Rd) to Savoy.
- Turn right on FSR 222 (road to Roughlock).
- Trailhead will be on your left approximately 4.7 miles from turn.
