Experience

The trail varies from gradual to steep. This is a mostly open hike amongst a few ponderosa trees, but the panoramic view from the top makes the experience impressive. This is one of the three peaks forming the “crown” that gives Spearfish the nickname, Queen City. (Spearfish Mountain and Crow Peak are the others.)

Directions

  • Take I-90 Exit 12 in Spearfish.
  • Take Jackson Blvd to the West.
  • Turn right on N 10th St.
  • Turn right again on E Nevada St.
  • Trailhead is at the end of Nevada St., through a tunnel under I-90 to the trail.

Shorter hike because the trails were muddy and I didn’t want to damage them further. Good trail for near-town hiking.

We hiked this trail in early October. The oak trees were turning and made the hike extra pretty. We saw a lone turkey wandering through the pasture.

Nice network of narrow trails around the mtn with varied terrain but mostly good dirt footing. Beautiful views of the area from the top and easy access from tpen.

The first hike at Lookout Mt. was fairly flat, will have to try another trail there.

Several trails you can take, and the cows have created a few more. drawback is you hear interstate traffic for a good part of the trail.

I have a lot to say about this one. The trail markers were confusing, it seemed like a lot of trails weren’t marked. It was a little too close to the highway for the beginning of our hike (we went right first). We then got to the yellow loop and the hike got fun’ getting to the very top up those rocks was hard with a dog but we did it. Also the cows everywhere were… interesting! My hiking app said I went 6.3 miles, no combination of any loops makes up 6.3, pretty sure I took some wrong turns.

There are several established trails in this area, along with a copious amount of wildlife and cattle trails. There are few trail markings so it could be pretty frustrating if you have your heart set on one specific trail. If you’re just looking for some exercise and potentially some amazing views, you really can’t go wrong. Just meander around the area, and it’s pretty easy to find your way back to the trailhead when you’re ready. My only caution is that when certain parts of the trail get wet, they are super slippery. Other than than, it’s a fun trail system.
