A surprising amount of elevation change for a prairie trail. The variety of plant life was incredible.

The trail has some decent incline and decline along the way, nothing too terrible though. Nice view of the sunrise if you get an early start and so peaceful. Saw some turkeys and deer along the way, also heard some coyote calls.

What a beaut! The mixed grass prairie is so romantic. This trail brings users through the lovely prairie found in the southern part of Custer State Park. In mid-summer this trail is teeming with wildflowers… and also bison herds… and rattlesnakes. So, beware! If you see a herd of bison whilst parking the car, odds are they will interfere with your experience. Perhaps come again at another hour or day. On two separate occasions hiking this trail I met an entire herd of bison. In both instances, I had to bushwack around the herd to the road and walk to the parking lot. On another occasion I came by 2 prairie rattlesnakes. No big deal if you’re aware of their signs and on the look out. If you have the opportunity to walk the Prairie Trail, please do- you won’t regret it, just be aware of the other users that occupy this gorgeous landscape!
