Experience

To begin the hike, walk around the gate and follow the path. This is an easy trail that is good for both beginners and runners.  The trail brings you through thick forest mostly on a wide, maintained road.  At the end of the hike, you will be on the rim of the Stratobowl where there is a history plaque about the balloon flights in the 1930’s & 1950’s.

Directions

From Rapid City, take Hwy 16 south towards Rockerville. About 2 miles past Bear Country, right after the Conoco station, you will see a little turnout on the right with a gate across the road.  Park here, this is the trailhead.

Nice, wide trail. Easy for families with small children or dogs. Educational as well!

Not much of a trail, more like a dirt road, but the view at the top is totally worth it.

This is not an exciting hike compared to most in the Hills, but it’s perfect for beginners, families, and beginning bikers. The views at the top are pretty and there are some very interesting large plaques to read. It’s nice and close to Rapid, so it’s great if you don’t have a lot of time or if you want to do a little hike before or after taking family to see Mt Rushmore!

Easy in and back trail, great history of hot air balloons that took off from this spot carved in to some granite at the end make sure you read them. chain link fence around them so people don’t trash them. when I was in High School you could drive back there in your car.

An easy walk along a forest service road that is blocked to vehicle travel. Once you reach the top, you can wander off the road for some great views. There is a plaque and engraved stones that tell the historical significance of this site.

More of a fire road, but there are single-track trails you can pick up to extend the hike. There is a decent view of the homes and creek below and a historic plaque at the end of the fire road section. This would be a pleasant short trail for kids (even on bikes) but I probably won’t go out of my way to hike it again.
