This trail is built on city property and surrounded by Forest Service Property. Although The City Trail is approved, the Forest Service section has yet to be approved. Three quarters of a mile into your hike you will reach what is called the “Rock Giant”. Take your time and climb to the top of the structure to experience the view. The trail will take you down to the Double Dams. These dams, supplied by Alkali Creek, used to support the City of Sturgis’ water supply. There are a total of 4 filled Dams in this area. All of them have fish in them. Black Hills Trails 501c3 is working with the city of Sturgis, BLM and Forest Service to build the additional trail sections.

  • Take Exit 32 Sturgis.
  • Turn south on Junction Ave which turns into Vanocker Canyon Rd.
  • Follow Vanocker approximately 3.5 miles until you reach a small parking lot on the left (a forest service brush pile area).
  • Follow forest service road up a 2 track jeep road until you hit the trail.

Great location but the trail head is a bit hard to see with the tall grass. Could also use some better info in the guide for this trail.
