Experience

Willow Creek Trail is a dirt covered loop that is located near Willow Creek and passes through forested areas of birch, spruce and pine trees for 2.6 miles. The trail level is easy and will take 1–2 hours to complete.  It also connects to the lost cabin trail indicated on the map. We suggest traversing the path in a clockwise manner so you will end near the water fall and a shallow pool to cool off after your journey. The beginning of the trail offers little shade, but you will have wonderful views of the Black Elk Wilderness and the Norbeck Wildlife Preserve along the way. Dogs on leashes are permitted and you will find an occasional horseback rider as well, compliments of a horse camp near the trail head.

Directions

  • From Hill City, travel south on US-385.
  • Make left turn onto SD-244.
  • Turn right on 355.

Nice hike, narrow trail and lots of horse poop so be careful with your step! Amazing views though.

nice trail but dusty from trail riding on it, would be better in the fall when trail rides at Palmer Gulch are done.

Easy trail, beautiful views, abundant raspberries in early/mid-August. Perfect hike to get away, when the bikers are everywhere else in the Hills!

Nice hike. A lot of horse poop. Couldn’t really smell the outdoors, only horse manure.

Jan 13, 2018. Did the Willow Creek Loop #8 , I believe. Snow hiked with about 25 women. Trail was easy to follow, after the trailhead since other hikers there before us. Only saw one marker at an intersection with trail #, which we took for about 1/2 mile up and back to increase or total mileage. After returning to the intesection, we tool a left and finish the loop. the whole trail covered in snow, with ice underneath.

Great trail on a hot day with kids! Wildflowers, butterflies, mushrooms and strawberries along the trail in late June. Views of Black Elk Peak. Waterfall at the end was a welcome spot to cool off!

This is a decent little loop, but the trail was pretty torn up with a lot of horse traffic. There was a lot of horse apples and muddy spots to dodge, with several groups on horseback passing by as we hiked. Not a trail I’d recommend if you’re looking for solitude, but easy and fairly well marked if you’re just looking to stretch your legs.
